After the success of The Lorax, Cartoon Network is jumping on the bandwagon with a new children's movie, We Bare Bears: The Movie. Three brother bear cubs awkwardly try to fit in with civilized society, either trying to get food, making new friends on the street, or scheming to be famous online. Grizzly, Panda and Baby Bear stack atop each other when they venture out from their den and explore the hipster neighborhoods of the San Francisco bay area, and it is clear that the bears have lots to learn about the modern world.
The movie is a direct sequel to The Lorax, with the same animation style and voice cast of the former, except this time, the movie stars four bears instead of just one. A very animated story is told within a very animated frame of reference. Although the animation isn't as good as the original, the film does make a strong impression because it's so animated.
Most of the movie follows the main story line, which concerns Grizzly and Panda's attempts to prove they really can be bear friends by going shopping for themselves. While they're in a mall, though, things go south quickly, with two shoppers being attacked by a vicious pack of bears and the animals' owner, Bob, who has some strange motivations. As the bear friends flee Bob and his army of creatures, they meet up with a cute human girl, Chloe, who is running a boutique. With the help of her dear friends, they discover that she is actually a celebrity, but what exactly she does is unknown, although it seems that she has a large role in the movie.
Chloe is a funny and interesting character, whose first line is "I'm not going to talk to you about anything". As the bear friends follow her around, though, she tells a lot about her past, her family, the life she's leading now, etc. and is the main voice of reason why the movie is so fun to watch. Even if the jokes are few and far between, they still manage to hold the attention of an audience. In fact, I could listen to the voices of her friends all day long, as they make a few funny comments at Chloe quotes and even mention interesting bits of history about the bears. The movie also has a number of wonderful moments where Chloe and her friends appear to have more information than they actually do, such as when Grizzly tells her he's lost his best friend to a bear who lives inside a bag of popcorn, or when Panda mentions he's going to find out what's in the bag.
The plot of We Care Bears: The Movie takes place mostly in the USA, in California, although it also takes a trip to a few other places. This isn't a bad thing, since California is one of my favorite countries to travel to in general, and this movie is no exception.
In my opinion, it's not as good as the original, but it's a pretty entertaining kids movie. You should give it a chance and see for yourself how much you'll enjoy watching it.
